Hire the five roles that keep AI agents from breaking before scale

A hiring trigger checklist for operators deploying AI agents in production, built around runtime, audit, identity, evaluation, and support.

Refer's job-search agent can make a bold claim. Refer is a reverse recruiter that represents job seekers rather than employers. Refer reports that over half of candidates receive an interview within 24 hours after an introduction. The service is delivered by an AI agent called Lia. If the agent secures a job, the candidate pays 20% of the first month's salary. The claim is easy to market. The operation is harder to keep in production.

Before scale, the team needs owners for runtime, the enforcement record, identity scope, evaluation checks, and support handoff. The checklist below turns those failure modes into hiring triggers. Each test is quick and repeatable.

The checklist is the staffing plan

  • Agent runtime engineer. Hire when the live path needs a check. Test: can you show a live check that stops a bad call?
  • Governance lead. Hire when the record needs an owner. Test: can you show the enforcement log?
  • Identity-security engineer. Hire when credentials need a scope. Test: can you show how agent credentials are scoped?
  • Evaluation data scientist. Hire when behavior needs a check. Test: can you show a recurring evaluation result?
  • Customer success and operations lead. Hire when deployment needs a handoff. Test: can you show a named owner for onboarding and support?

Runtime enforcement is the first break point

Gartner projected that 50% of AI agent deployment failures by 2030 would be caused by inadequate runtime enforcement from governance platforms. The agent can act before the team can review it. Fiddler enforces policy inline on the agent request and response path in under 80ms, stopping violations before data leaves the network. The runtime engineer carries that path.

Audit evidence is a staffing decision

Compliance review asks what was enforced, who triggered it, and what happened. Fiddler records each enforcement action with the triggering party and outcome, so teams can build audit evidence for GRC standards and AI regulatory requirements. The record is the control. Fiddler AI users typically include software and AI engineering teams, data science teams, platform/DevOps teams, and security/compliance teams that keep agents and models accurate, safe, and compliant across their lifecycle. The governance lead owns the record. The evaluation data scientist keeps model behavior inside it.

Identity, evaluation, and support close the loop

Silverfort's identity-security mission covers humans, machines, and AI agents in both on-premises and cloud environments. The identity-security engineer sets the credential scope. Fiddler's in-environment Centor Models can reduce evaluation total cost of ownership by up to 98% compared with foundation-model approaches. The evaluation data scientist uses that tooling to keep checks cheap enough to run often. Fiddler's Enterprise plan includes dedicated customer-success support through a named Customer Success Manager plus customized onboarding. The customer success and operations lead handles the handoff from deployment to support.

Agent startups often inherit a stack before they inherit a team. Twin's startup plans start at €20 per month. Twin says its platform connects to more than 250 services. Twin advertises that its service can replace five SaaS subscriptions and an ops hire. The claim is a staffing test for teams. If the agent can absorb routine operations, the human team should own the exceptions. The runtime engineer owns the failure path; the governance lead, the record; the identity-security engineer, the scope; the evaluation data scientist, the drift check; and the customer success and operations lead, the exception path.

Run the checklist before adding a new customer, a new model, or a new integration. If the answer is no, the hire is the control that lets the agent keep working. It names the missing owner before an incident does. Run it at every planning cycle before scale.
